Tourist arrivals at Dhorpatan, Nepal’s only hunting reserve, have seen a significant rise over the past year, with over 23,000 visitors recorded.
According to the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve Office in Baglung, a total of 23,692 tourists visited the area in the fiscal year 2081/82, marking an increase of over 8,000 compared to the previous fiscal year, which saw 15,573 visitors.
Of the total visitors, 213 were from non-SAARC countries and 12 from SAARC member states, while the vast majority were domestic tourists.
Ranger Sagar Subedi of the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve Office attributed the surge in tourist numbers to increased promotional activities and improvements in tourism infrastructure. “The rise in visitors has also led to a boost in revenue,” he added.
Nepali tourists are charged an entry fee of Rs 100, and over two million rupees were collected in entrance fees during the last fiscal year alone.
The growing popularity of trekking routes in the region has also contributed to the tourism boom, according to Subedi. While international tourists primarily visit Dhorpatan for hunting, domestic travelers are drawn to its scenic beauty and cultural sites, including the Dhorpatan Valley, Niseldhor, Dhorbarah Temple, Bukipatan, Jaljala, and more.
Ram Bahadur Gharti, operator of the Dhorpatan Community Homestay, shared that around two dozen hotels and homestays are now providing services to visitors in the valley. “Tourists can now easily reach Dhorpatan through organized tour packages,” he said.
With its rich biodiversity, scenic landscapes, and growing amenities, Dhorpatan continues to attract more adventurers and nature lovers each year.
