To facilitate trekking and improve trail navigation for tourists in the Manaslu Conservation Area, new marking poles and signposts have been installed at multiple locations along the trekking route in northern Gorkha.
According to Santosh Sherchan, head of the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) office, a total of 53 new trail markers-including 35 signposts and 18 marking poles-were added during the current fiscal year 2081/82 (2024/25).
“To help trekkers easily find their way, we installed signposts at 35 different locations and placed marking poles at 18 key spots along the trail,” Sherchan said.
The newly installed marking poles have been placed along the route from Larke Bazaar to Bhimthang in the Nubri Valley area. With this addition, the total number of marking poles along this stretch has increased from 108 to 124.
In terms of signposts, 19 have been placed along the route toward Ganesh Himal in the Chum Valley, 14 in the Nubri Valley, and 2 at Sirdibas.
“These signposts help tourists identify their location, altitude, estimated time to the next destination, and offer information about the area’s local wildlife,” Sherchan explained.
He also emphasized the importance of marking poles during snowfall, when the trail often becomes hidden. “The poles make it easier for trekkers to stay on course even when the trail is covered in snow,” he added.
Looking ahead, MCAP plans to install 25 additional marking poles and 35 more signposts during the next fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26), further enhancing trail safety and accessibility in the region.
