The monsoon has arrived in Nepal significantly earlier than anticipated this year, making its entry 15 days ahead of schedule.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the monsoon entered the country on Thursday night through the eastern region and has already spread across most parts of Koshi Province.
Director General of the department, Kamal Ram Joshi, stated that while the monsoon was initially expected to arrive around June 13, it officially began on May 29. However, it will take some more time for the monsoon to cover the rest of the country fully.
Currently, westerly and local winds continue to influence weather conditions across Nepal. Meteorological stations in Koshi Province have so far recorded light to moderate rainfall.
Forecasters predict that this year’s monsoon will bring above-average rainfall to many parts of the country. The eastern region of Karnali Province, the northern areas of Lumbini, and a significant portion of Gandaki Province are expected to receive 55 to 65 percent more rainfall than usual.
Similarly, the southern part of Sudurpaschim, the western region of Lumbini, northeastern Gandaki, and northern areas of Bagmati and Koshi Provinces are forecasted to get 45 to 55 percent above-average rainfall.
Meanwhile, the eastern and southern parts of Madhesh Province, along with several other regions, are expected to see rainfall between 35 to 45 percent above the seasonal average.
Authorities are advising the public to remain alert and prepared for potential weather-related disruptions, particularly in regions forecasted to receive significantly higher rainfall.
