Torrential monsoon rains have led to rising water levels in the Ganges River, submerging key infrastructure along its banks in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
A floating platform jetty and changing rooms, built for pilgrims and visitors, are now surrounded by floodwaters. Despite the inundation, devotees continue to arrive in large numbers, crowding the banks and boarding boats to take ritual dips in the river, which holds deep religious significance in Hinduism.
Local officials have issued warnings about the dangers of flooding, but are facing challenges in controlling the flow of pilgrims. The rising river level has also raised concerns about erosion, waterborne diseases, and further displacement in low-lying areas.
Monsoon season, which runs from June to September, often brings both vital rainfall for agriculture and dangerous flooding across many parts of India. Authorities in Prayagraj remain on high alert as forecasts predict continued heavy rains over the coming days.
