An agricultural cooperative in Tulsipur Sub-Metropolis-4, Dang district, has established a seed bank to safeguard indigenous crop varieties. The initiative aims to protect crops that are facing a gradual decline.
Jharana Pun, Chairperson of the cooperative, announced that a seed collection campaign is underway. The campaign will be expanded progressively, she stated, adding that seeds from more than 50 varieties of crops and vegetables have been collected to date. These indigenous seeds will be cultivated to increase production.
"The collected seeds will be utilized to enhance production and subsequently made available to farmers," Pun added.
The seed bank is focusing on preserving local varieties of rice, soybean, wheat, tomato, sesame, foxtail millet, and buckwheat. Kulraj Chaudhari, chief of the agriculture section at the local level, lauded the initiative, stating, "Many traditional crops are rapidly disappearing. Therefore, this initiative launched by the cooperative is commendable."
