Farmers in Sunsari district are breathing a sigh of relief after consistent rainfall since Saturday night ended a prolonged dry spell, reviving hopes for a successful paddy season.
The rainfall has significantly improved irrigation conditions in several areas, including Inaruwa, Koshi, Bhokraha, Harinagar, Barahchhetra, Dewanganj, Barju, Gadhi, Duhabi, and Ramdhuni, where farmers had been struggling to transplant rice seedlings due to water shortages.
"The rain has come just in time," said Surendra Urao, a farmer from Bhokraha Narsingh Rural Municipality. "We were worried about missing the planting window, but now we're back in the fields."
Chandan Mehata, a local farmer, also expressed relief. "The fields were drying up, and the seedlings had started wilting. This rainfall saved them and gave us a fresh opportunity to continue planting."
According to Nil Kamal Singh, Chief of the Agricultural Knowledge Centre in Inaruwa, the rainfall has especially benefited areas lacking groundwater irrigation. "Farmers have now resumed plantation work with full energy in regions that were previously left out due to the drought."
The rainfall has also increased water flow in local rivers and streams, including the Sunsari, Budhi, Maria, and Gadan, further aiding agricultural activities.
Farmers are now hopeful that if the rainfall continues at a steady pace, this year’s paddy yield could still meet expectations.
